Fishing is a skill associated with catching items with a fishing rod or by collecting items by diving. You can fish in any body of water (including in The Mines) , except for the town fountain.

Rod-Based Fishing

Overview & Controls

To cast your rod into a body of water, hold down the Use Tool button (varies due to platform). The outline of a square will appear in the direction you are facing. It will change colour based on how far away it is from you. If the tile you've selected is not appropriate for fishing, a red X will appear and your cast will fail. Casting your rod does not consume Stamina - Stamina is only consumed once a fish is successfully caught, so don't worry about trying multiple times to get the right aim.

In fishing-appropriate waters, dark fish shapes will be moving around. These are what you are aiming to catch. While you can conceivably cast into any water, for best results, try to aim your bobber directly on top of a fish. If not that, as close to it as possible.

Once one catches interest, it will slowly swim to your bobber. It may 'nibble' on the bobber a few times before biting down. Do not be fooled by this- tugging your rod then will result in the fish swimming away and a failed catch. Once an exclamation point appears over your bobber, click the Use Tool button to reel in your catch.

Whether you succeeded or not at this point is (likely) dependent on your fishing skill level, what buffs you have, and the difficulty of the fish itself. The first time a player catches each specific kind of fish, a message displaying the name, price, and description of the fish appears. If you catch a junk item (wood, glass, etc) and it's your first time encountering it, this message will also appear.

Specific Mechanics

Schools of Fish

Rarely, fish will clump together in one spot in the water. This is an excellent place to cast your rod into and an opportunity to catch multiple fish in a row.

With the School crasher.pngSchool Crasher Skill, swimming into a school of fish will drop half the fish currently in school, without expending any stamina.

After unlocking the Frenzy.pngFrenzy Skill, a school of fish will sometimes spawn after catching a fish with a Worn Fishing Rod.png Fishing Rod.

Legendary Fish

After unlocking the Legendary.pngLegendary Skill, when the correct weather conditions occur, The Player will receive a message before the day begins:

"A legendary fish is nearby..."

The message will be accompanied by a silhouette of the Legendary Fish that is able to be caught that day.

Each Legendary Fish is only available during one season of the year.

As of v0.12.0 only one of each variety of Legendary Fish is able to be caught per save, if wanting to complete The Museum it is important to donate the caught fish to The Fish Wing, otherwise this will not (currently) be possible.

Despite their rarity, Legendary Fish do not sell for much tesserae, nor are they a popular gift (even Terithia icon.pngTerithia is only neutral to them, so there is little benefit of not donating them to The Fish Wing currently.

Dive-Based Fishing

The Player next to a Dive Hole
For a list of fish and items that can be caught when diving, see Divable Fish and Diving Only Items.

If you see a dark hole in the water, you can swim up to it and dive for loot or certain fish. Your character will duck under the water, then emerge holding an item. Unlike regular Fishing icon.png Fishing, Fishing icon.png Diving does not consume stamina.
With the Sunken secrets.pngSunken Secrets Skill, these "Dive Holes" may also contain Artifacts from the Sunken Artifact set.

Trivia

  • Despite the grey (presumably fish-shaped) oval noticeably swimming up to your bobber and biting it, you can reel up many not-fish items such as wood, glass, and even treasure boxes!
