- Elsie's Hated Gift reply makes reference to the common but incorrect belief that all female Praying Mantises eat the head of their mate after copulating. This behaviour was first reported by observers of captive specimens, but more recent field research has produced little evidence of this. Confining the mantids may have reduced the males’ ability to mate safely. Also, this behaviour is not seen across all mantis (Mantodea) species. [1]
